Pack 1 pick 1:
My Pick: Chaos Imps
I can
either take a Rakdos card or a Golgari card.
At this point in the format, I have seen enough Izzet decks lose and
prefer to stay out of it at all costs.
For this reason, both of these cards are essentially committing me to a
guild. I think it’s very close between
the Korozda Guildmage and the imps, but I haven’t played Rakdos in a
while.
Pack 1 pick 2:
My Pick: Dead Reveler
I’m passing
up on the Golgari Charm I could have had if I took the guildmage. Dead Reveler is strong in Rakdos so all hope
is not lost. It could be possible that
the guy passing to me took Augur Spree as that’s one of the few cards I would
take over Precinct Captain at common.
The other possibility is that he/she simply took a foil.
Pack 1 pick 3:
My Pick: Sewer Shambler
I don’t
want to splash Thoughtflare in Rakdos so I go with the beater. It can be argued that I simply go into Izzet,
but I want to stay the course.
Pack 1 pick 4:
My Pick: Assassin's Strike
I’m not a
huge fan of jailbreaker, so I’ll certainly take a removal spell over it. Note that I now have two six-drops and don’t
want any more.
Pack 1 pick 5:
My Pick: Rakdos Guildgate
I like
Rakdos to have a more midrange feel, which makes Traitorous Instinct weaker for
me.
Pack 1 pick 6:
My Pick: Rites of Reaping
At this
point, I haven’t seen any red cards so I hedge with a golgari card, despite
passing the guildmage so early.
Pack 1 pick 7:
My Pick: Golgari Guildgate
Pack 1 pick 8:
My Pick: Rakdos Keyrune
Assuming I
can activate the keyrune, it’s better than lantern.
Pack 1 pick 9:
My Pick: Trestle Troll
There can’t
be many Golgari drafters here.
Pack 1 pick 10:
Golgari Charm Cobblebrute Axebane Stag Dramatic Rescue Rogue's Passage My Pick: Golgari Charm
Since this
tabled, it’s clear Golgari is the place to be.
I’m going to abandon Rakdos.
Pack 1 pick 11:
Aquus Steed Mizzium Skin Catacomb Slug Essence Backlash My Pick: Catacomb Slug
Pack 1 pick 12:
Ethereal Armor Cobblebrute Izzet Guildgate My Pick: Izzet Guildgate
Pack 1 pick 13:
Grisly Salvage Chronic Flooding My Pick: Grisly Salvage
I’m
definitely playing this 13 pick!
Pack 1 pick 14:
Oak Street Innkeeper My Pick: Oak Street Innkeeper
Pack 2 pick 1:
My Pick: Dreg Mangler
Pack 2 pick 2:
My Pick: Thrill-Kill Assassin
Pack 2 pick 3:
My Pick: Daggerdrome Imp
I don’t
care for this card in Rakdos, but it’s an all-star in Golgari.
Pack 2 pick 4:
My Pick: Stab Wound
Since it’s
clear the guy next to me didn’t take the guildmage, there should be a ton of
Rakdos/Golgari coming my way.
Pack 2 pick 5:
My Pick: Golgari Longlegs
This card
has quickly become my favorite 5 drop in a variety of decks. It feels like Knightly Valor because it was
underrated by many initially, but it’s very powerful.
Pack 2 pick 6:
My Pick: Towering Indrik
As
expected, we still have a ton of Rakdos coming this way in the form of a 6th
pick guildmage.
Pack 2 pick 7:
My Pick: Stonefare Crocodile
Pack 2 pick 8:
My Pick: Axebane Guardian
This is a
signal green is open on both sides, but this creature isn’t amazing in 2 color
decks.
Pack 2 pick 9:
My Pick: Korozda Monitor
Pack 2 pick 10:
Seller of Songbirds Viashino Racketeer Electrickery Search Warrant Druid's Deliverance My Pick: Electrickery
Pack 2 pick 11:
Terrus Wurm Skull Rend Counterflux Chorus of Might My Pick: Terrus Wurm
Pack 2 pick 12:
Drainpipe Vermin Chronic Flooding Archweaver My Pick: Archweaver
Pack 2 pick 13:
Survey the Wreckage Axebane Stag My Pick: Axebane Stag
Pack 2 pick 14:
Axebane Stag My Pick: Axebane Stag
I picked 4
Pack 3 pick 1:
My Pick: Sluiceway Scorpion
This is one
of the best common Golgari creatures.
I’m not even upset first-picking it here.
Pack 3 pick 2:
My Pick: Drudge Beetle
I like this
creature, but this is a weak pack in general.
It’s important to have two-drops because scavenge tops off your curve.
Pack 3 pick 3:
My Pick: Daggerdrome Imp
I want
exactly two of this creature in heavy scavenge decks.
Pack 3 pick 4:
My Pick: Launch Party
Centaur's Herald is mediocre in Golgari as I already have a bunch of 3 drops.
Pack 3 pick 5:
My Pick: Golgari Longlegs
This is a
close pick between Giant Growth and longlegs, but I need some late game
monsters.
Pack 3 pick 6:
My Pick: Grisly Salvage
I might
play two of this card, but I certainly don’t want two Launch Party.
Pack 3 pick 7:
My Pick: Golgari Keyrune
I would
rather not play Axebane Guardian or Rakdos Keyrune so this is a great 18th mana
source.
Pack 3 pick 8:
My Pick: Sluiceway Scorpion
I was happy
with it as my first pick so there’s no reason to not be eight times as happy
getting it this late.
Pack 3 pick 9:
My Pick: Giant Growth
Pack 3 pick 10:
Mizzium Skin Dynacharge Ethereal Armor Doorkeeper Urban Burgeoning My Pick: Dynacharge
Pack 3 pick 11:
Downsize Drainpipe Vermin Chemister's Trick Chronic Flooding My Pick: Drainpipe Vermin
Pack 3 pick 12:
Brushstrider Crosstown Courier Rites of Reaping My Pick: Brushstrider
Pack 3 pick 13:
Chronic Flooding Mind Rot My Pick: Mind Rot
Pack 3 pick 14:
Destroy the Evidence My Pick: Destroy the Evidence
This deck
looked solid despite missing out on a Korozda Guildmage. I’m glad I was able to scavenge a playable
deck since I was clearly cut out of Rakdos.

Notable
exclusions:
Grisly Salvage
Axebane Guardian
All of the
7 drops
Mind Rot
Match 1
Game 1
I win the
die roll and play first. We both keep
seven cards.
This game
began pretty awkwardly as the opponent only played Sewer Shamblers that I
couldn’t block. If I played Stab Wound
on one of them, he would scavenge onto the other. Golgari Longlegs was able to race pretty well
and the charm freed it from a Paralyzing Grasp to swing for the win.
Daggerdome Imp also played a key role as I scavenged onto it for two counters. Lifelink is the best way to fight unblockable Sewer Shamblers.

I sideboard
out Trestle Troll for Stonefare Crocodile for this reason.
Match 1
Game 2
He goes
first and we both keep seven.
The
Crocodile and Daggerdome Imp do a good job of keeping the race in my
favor. Golgari Longlegs is once again
quite impressive as he brings the beats. Golgari Charm acts as a Disenchant to kill a Deviant Glee.

Match 2
Game 1
I go first
and he mulligans to six.
Game one is
looking good for me, but I fail to be aggressive enough to close the deal. As it turns out, Death's Presence is great
against me. I make the mistake of
keeping my Daggerdome Imp alive by using Golgari Charm to regenerate it, but I
needed to kill the enchantment to have a shot at winning.

I don't
sideboard for game 2.
Match 2
Game 2
I’m on the
play and we both keep seven.
Daggerdome Imp is the victory condition again.
Don’t underestimate this creature.

I sideboard
in Archweaver as the game goes long and I take out Brushstrider since he has
two Seller of Songbirds to block.
Match 2
Game 3
We both
start out slow, but my opponent gets the end game cards to close it out. My Towering Indrik was arrested, meaning I
couldn’t block the 3/3 flyer. Death's Presence made an appearance, which meant I didn’t have a shot without Golgari Charm.

This deck
was very good against mine, but I still had a shot to win the match if I killed Death's Presence in the first game.
I liked the
way this deck played out because I had enough early drops to threaten a quick
win. The large number of scavenge
creatures provided mana sinks for the late game. This Golgari deck was better than most
because I don’t like dragging the game to the later turns. In this format, being aggressive is good as
long as you can swing through the walls.
