Drafting with Kyle - JOU/BNG/THS #2

Booster 1 - Journey Into Nyx

Pack 1 pick 1:

Ajani's Presence Nature's Panoply Grim Guardian Aerial Formation Satyr Hoplite Lagonna-Band Trailblazer Pheres-Band Thunderhoof Bladetusk Boar Dreadbringer Lampads Supply-Line Cranes Whitewater Naiads Disciple of Deceit Nyx-Fleece Ram Deicide Mountain

My Pick: Whitewater Naiads

I can pick a great blue uncommon in Whitewater Naiads or take an aggressive red card in Bladetusk Boar or Satyr Hoplite. The 4/4 has been very impressive so far, but I don’t fault you for taking one of the strong red beaters. I like red in this format so it was close for me.

Pack 1 pick 2:

Ravenous Leucrocota Nyx Infusion Godhunter Octopus Sigiled Skink Font of Vigor Satyr Grovedancer Font of Ire Bloodcrazed Hoplite Oreskos Swiftclaw Phalanx Formation Banishing Light Brain Maggot Dictate of Karametra Swamp

My Pick: Banishing Light

How can you go wrong with Oblivion Ring? I’m not a fan of splashing in this format, but I don’t mind blue/white.

Pack 1 pick 3:

Oakheart Dryads Font of Return Font of Fortunes Magma Spray Harvestguard Alseids Thassa's Devourer Desecration Plague Flamespeaker's Will Cast into Darkness Crystalline Nautilus Riddle of Lightning Cyclops of Eternal Fury Forest

My Pick: Crystalline Nautilus

I like this card because you can bestow it onto your opponent’s creature and target it. You end up with a 4/4 for your troubles. If you bestow it onto your own creature then your opponent needs to find two things to target your creatures. I am passing some solid red cards every pack so I need to be aware of that.

Pack 1 pick 4:

Godhunter Octopus Rouse the Mob Font of Vigor Oakheart Dryads Aspect of Gorgon Mortal Obstinacy Pin to the Earth Pheres-Band Thunderhoof Gluttonous Cyclops Wildfire Cerberus Knowledge and Power Plains

My Pick: Pin to the Earth

When you try to win with blue flyers shrinking a giant monster is a good way to win a race. I think this card is undervalued at this point.

Pack 1 pick 5:

Font of Return Font of Fortunes Harvestguard Alseids Thassa's Devourer Desecration Plague Flamespeaker's Will Cast into Darkness Wildfire Cerberus Consign to Dust Gold-Forged Sentinel Island

My Pick: Cast into Darkness

I haven’t seen too many white cards aside from the Banishing Light. Cast into Darkness is weakest in blue/black because it’s hard to take advantage of the “cannot block” clause. It’s still a very strong card and I will dip into another possible secondary color.

Pack 1 pick 6:

Font of Return Aerial Formation Eagle of the Watch Stonewise Fortifier Triton Shorestalker Renowned Weaver Bladetusk Boar Disciple of Deceit Eidolon of Rhetoric Plains

My Pick: Aerial Formation

This card is pretty good; it can win a game in a stalemate or be used as an efficient combat trick.

Pack 1 pick 7:

Font of Fortunes Ajani's Presence Cloaked Siren Cruel Feeding Mortal Obstinacy Desecration Plague Eidolon of Rhetoric Revel of the Fallen God Swamp

My Pick: Cloaked Siren

If I play white I would like an Ajani's Presence, but God's Willing is similar. I am sure I will play the siren.

Pack 1 pick 8:

Lightning Diadem Lagonna-Band Trailblazer Market Festival Pensive Minotaur Cast into Darkness Rollick of Abandon Swarmborn Giant Swamp

My Pick: Cast into Darkness

I should have taken Lagonna-Band Trailblazer. Even though the card is weaker, I should be more honest with my draft preferences. Black is weak in Born of the Gods so I need a better reason to stomach that second pack when white is much more powerful. White was my favorite color in Born of the Gods so I will likely choose a white card if I have a tough pick.

Pack 1 pick 9:

Ajani's Presence Nature's Panoply Lagonna-Band Trailblazer Bladetusk Boar Dreadbringer Lampads Nyx-Fleece Ram Mountain

My Pick: Ajani's Presence

Pack 1 pick 10:

Godhunter Octopus Font of Vigor Font of Ire Phalanx Formation Dictate of Karametra Swamp

My Pick: Godhunter Octopus

Pack 1 pick 11:

Harvestguard Alseids Desecration Plague Flamespeaker's Will Cyclops of Eternal Fury Forest

My Pick: Harvestguard Alseids

Pack 1 pick 12:

Godhunter Octopus Font of Vigor Gluttonous Cyclops Plains

My Pick: Godhunter Octopus

Pack 1 pick 13:

Font of Return Flamespeaker's Will Island

My Pick: Font of Return

Pack 1 pick 14:

Font of Return Plains

My Pick: Font of Return

Pack 1 pick 15:

Swamp

My Pick: Swamp

Booster 2 - Born of the Gods

Pack 2 pick 1:

Satyr Wayfinder Pharagax Giant Pheres-Band Raiders Great Hart Weight of the Underworld Setessan Oathsworn Akroan Skyguard Claim of Erebos Impetuous Sunchaser Pheres-Band Tromper Thunderous Might Aerie Worshippers Graverobber Spider Champion of Stray Souls Island

My Pick: Akroan Skyguard

This is a pivotal point in the draft. I can take Champion of Stay Souls, but 6 drops aren’t a priority. I can stay safe with blue and take Aerie Worshippers. My ultimate choice is Akroan Skyguard because it fits perfectly in the U/W Flyer archetype which I will likely play. Biases prevail.

Pack 2 pick 2:

Eye Gouge Siren Song Lyre Fearsome Temper Hold at Bay Setessan Starbreaker Weight of the Underworld Impetuous Sunchaser Culling Mark Necrobite Kragma Butcher Oracle's Insight Dawn to Dusk Karametra, God of Harvests Forest

My Pick: Oracle's Insight

Pack 2 pick 3:

Retraction Helix Nyxborn Eidolon Bolt of Keranos Mortal's Ardor Eye Gouge Nyxborn Triton Nyxborn Rollicker Karametra's Favor Retraction Helix Nyxborn Shieldmate Vortex Elemental Pinnacle of Rage Island

My Pick: Nyxborn Triton

I need more creatures and the shieldmate is basically an enchant creature. Retraction Helix is the strongest card in a vacuum, but I don’t want to take a card that requires an abundance of creatures if I can just take a solid creature.

Pack 2 pick 4:

Felhide Brawler Ephara's Radiance Setessan Oathsworn Reckless Reveler Snake of the Golden Grove Nullify Cyclops of One-Eyed Pass Necrobite Ephara's Enlightenment Eternity Snare Whims of the Fates Mountain

My Pick: Ephara's Enlightenment

This card is great.

Pack 2 pick 5:

Swordwise Centaur Epiphany Storm Hold at Bay Marshmist Titan Pheres-Band Tromper Cyclops of One-Eyed Pass Crypsis Nyxborn Triton Thassa's Rebuff God-Favored General Plains

My Pick: Nyxborn Triton

Pack 2 pick 6:

Eye Gouge Evanescent Intellect Fearsome Temper Hold at Bay Setessan Starbreaker Weight of the Underworld Impetuous Sunchaser Culling Mark Necrobite Island

My Pick: Hold at Bay

Pack 2 pick 7:

Great Hart Weight of the Underworld Setessan Oathsworn Claim of Erebos Impetuous Sunchaser Pheres-Band Tromper Kraken of the Straits Sunbond Mountain

My Pick: Great Hart

At this point I really need some creatures; preferably cheap, but I won’t be too picky.

Pack 2 pick 8:

Scouring Sands Felhide Brawler Swordwise Centaur Griffin Dreamfinder Karametra's Favor Nullify Lightning Volley Plains

My Pick: Griffin Dreamfinder

I really like this in U/W decks because they don’t win games fast like Boros. The Dreamfinder lets me take a game long. You can also return a Nyxborn Triton and then bestow on the dreamfinder.

Pack 2 pick 9:

Satyr Wayfinder Pharagax Giant Pheres-Band Raiders Great Hart Claim of Erebos Thunderous Might Island

My Pick: Great Hart

Pack 2 pick 10:

Hold at Bay Weight of the Underworld Impetuous Sunchaser Culling Mark Necrobite Forest

My Pick: Necrobite

Pack 2 pick 11:

Mortal's Ardor Eye Gouge Nyxborn Rollicker Karametra's Favor Island

My Pick: Mortal's Ardor

I already have Ajani's Presence and Aerial Formation so Mortal's Ardor isn’t necessary.

Pack 2 pick 12:

Ephara's Radiance Necrobite Whims of the Fates Mountain

My Pick: Whims of the Fates

Pack 2 pick 13:

Epiphany Storm Thassa's Rebuff Plains

My Pick: Thassa's Rebuff

Pack 2 pick 14:

Evanescent Intellect Island

My Pick: Evanescent Intellect

Pack 2 pick 15:

Kraken of the Straits

My Pick: Kraken of the Straits

Booster 3 - Theros

Pack 3 pick 1:

Ill-Tempered Cyclops Guardians of Meletis Battlewise Valor Leonin Snarecaster Priest of Iroas Read the Bones Thassa's Bounty Lost in a Labyrinth Sedge Scorpion Felhide Minotaur Ordeal of Erebos Kragma Warcaller Dark Betrayal Anger of the Gods Island

My Pick: Leonin Snarecaster

This pack is pretty bad for me.

Pack 3 pick 2:

Messenger's Speed Mnemonic Wall Cavalry Pegasus Loathsome Catoblepas Nylea's Presence Coastline Chimera Pharika's Cure Defend the Hearth Ray of Dissolution Wavecrash Triton Centaur Battlemaster Stoneshock Giant Favored Hoplite Swamp

My Pick: Favored Hoplite

This card was awesome in triple Theros and I probably overrated it for block draft. Each pack removes the possibility of opening insane bestow cards. I should have picked Wavecrash Triton.

Pack 3 pick 3:

Nylea's Disciple Stymied Hopes Nessian Courser Two-Headed Cerberus Asphodel Wanderer Breaching Hippocamp Silent Artisan Akroan Crusader Savage Surge Purphoros's Emissary Satyr Piper Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Forest

My Pick: Breaching Hippocamp

These packs have not been kind to me.

Pack 3 pick 4:

Gods Willing March of the Returned Satyr Hedonist Satyr Rambler Leonin Snarecaster Feral Invocation Setessan Battle Priest Horizon Scholar Anvilwrought Raptor Flamespeaker Adept Celestial Archon Forest

My Pick: Celestial Archon

That’s more like it.

Pack 3 pick 5:

Cavalry Pegasus Loathsome Catoblepas Nylea's Presence Returned Phalanx Coastline Chimera Defend the Hearth Leonin Snarecaster Setessan Griffin Vaporkin Anvilwrought Raptor Swamp

My Pick: Vaporkin

This is one of my favorite aggressive 2-drops.

Pack 3 pick 6:

Cavalry Pegasus Loathsome Catoblepas Nylea's Presence Last Breath Scourgemark Satyr Rambler Setessan Griffin Disciple of Phenax Stoneshock Giant Swamp

My Pick: Cavalry Pegasus

I will take just about any reasonable 2-drop at this point. This can give Favored Hoplite flying and not too much else.

Pack 3 pick 7:

Lash of the Whip Messenger's Speed Gods Willing Two-Headed Cerberus Silent Artisan Borderland Minotaur Peak Eruption Arena Athlete Plains

My Pick: Gods Willing

Pack 3 pick 8:

Fleetfeather Sandals Demolish Ephara's Warden Wild Celebrants Benthic Giant Traveling Philosopher Witches' Eye Mountain

My Pick: Traveling Philosopher

Hooray, another human to give flying.

Pack 3 pick 9:

Priest of Iroas Thassa's Bounty Lost in a Labyrinth Felhide Minotaur Kragma Warcaller Dark Betrayal Island

My Pick: Lost in a Labyrinth

Pack 3 pick 10:

Messenger's Speed Mnemonic Wall Loathsome Catoblepas Defend the Hearth Ray of Dissolution Swamp

My Pick: Ray of Dissolution

A fine sideboard card and thorough.

Pack 3 pick 11:

Two-Headed Cerberus Silent Artisan Akroan Crusader Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx Forest

My Pick: Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

Rare draft. This is not usually a good draft card.

Pack 3 pick 12:

March of the Returned Satyr Rambler Setessan Battle Priest Forest

My Pick: Setessan Battle Priest

I could see playing this, unfortunately.

Pack 3 pick 13:

Loathsome Catoblepas Defend the Hearth Swamp

My Pick: Loathsome Catoblepas

Pack 3 pick 14:

Setessan Griffin Swamp

My Pick: Setessan Griffin

Pack 3 pick 15:

Plains

My Pick: Plains

I should have committed to white earlier, so I have myself to blame for how the deck turned out. Everyone has their biases in draft and I should have faced mine instead of entertaining the idea of being blue/black.

Notable sideboard cards:

Great Hart

Mortal's Ardor

Ray of Dissolution

Match 1 Game 1

I win the roll and we both keep seven cards.

This game showed the power of Pin to the Earth in a racing situation. An opposing Akroan Skyguard can easily grow too large to handle, but shrinking the power can put an end to that plan. We both drew too many lands, but I was able to eventually draw a Celestial Archon and protect it with God's Willing.

Sideboard in Great Hart. I play 41 cards as I will be put on the draw. This matchup will be grindy as small creatures run into each other, so I don’t want to flood.

Match 1 Game 2

We both kept seven cards and I’m on the draw. My hand was speculative as it had a single land, but numerous two drops and a Banishing Light to stop the first large creature to enter play.

Satyr Hoplite came out on the first turn and it grew very quickly. It had 8 power the turn before I needed to hit it with Banishing Light.

Great Hart was strong as it held off multiple creatures with 2 power for many turns. I ended up getting too many lands at the end of the game and died to a pair of 1-power flyers.

Sideboard: out Breaching Hippocamp and go back to 40 cards. I don’t want to draw the 3/2 because it trades off with two-drops.

Match 1 Game 3

This hand was also speculative and didn’t end up working out. I should have shipped it, not because of hindsight, but due to the lack of Banishing Light. I can’t get out of trouble if my opponent starts too strong. In this case, Brimaz came out to play and it wrecked me.

This draft was an interesting case study in what happens when you are too cautious in choosing a secondary color. I should have picked more white cards early to cut it off for Born of the Gods. My initial bias against blue/black should have also been confronted earlier. I picked the Akroan Skyguard over Champion of Stray Souls because I like white/blue (and the card is better). Since white is much better than black in BNG, I was likely going to be faced with that decision and should have anticipated it.

It was actually unlikely I would end up playing black in the first place because I am hesitant to pair it with blue. The blue tempo cards are much weaker in blue/black because it’s difficult to be aggressive. I was waffling between an aggro deck and a control deck, which is riskier than hedging between blue/white and blue/red because they lead to similar archetypes.

I also should have also taken more mulligans because the lack of removal made it difficult to recover from slow starts.

I’m happy to have made so many mistakes as they provide great learning experiences. Thanks for reading!
