The Task
Blackborder user "planeswalk" won my latest deck analysis auction and had the following task for me:
"It has been noted that in post-M10 Standard over 35 different types
of decks have won or top 8ed professional/semi-professional events
(Nationals, The Pro Tour, and listed PTQs).
I was wondering what you
thought of the power of a hypothetical rogue deck that played in tier 1
for standard, but that no one had seen before. As an example, or as
close as I can get to one, I was wondering what you thought of this
deck, what you'd think it was about a turn one forest and turn two
plains, bant sureblade and how you would assess the situation of you
and the deck you're playing against, playing, say, 5 color control.
Are
rogue decks more potent now then ever because of the ability to
surprise? Do you like such a diverse format? How has it effected your
sideboard building/sideboarding?

Rogue Decks
Hi Anthony!
Thank you for sharing your deck list and ideas.
I am a huge fan of rogue decks, almost in every played format. The cool thing about those decks is that your opponent usually has no clue about how to sideboard against you. This means that some decisions will be harder to take for them when they don't know what they are playing against.
Sadly, in a format full of diversity, rogue decks are not as good as they used to be, because people stop to sideboard or maindeck cards that are only good against a specific deck like:
Instead people start playing with cards that shine against certain strategies:
In such formats, rogue decks have to develop an entirely new strategy to be rogue decks, like being creatureless in order to dodge removal spells, or maybe even combo decks.
Analysis
Still, I like your list quite a lot and it will be easy to carry over to the "Zendikar-Standard", since it doesnt lose a lot of cards.
A few things I thought about in your deck:
- Harm's Way is a card you never ever want to cascade into. I would rather add the 4th Lightning Bolt and maybe a 24th land because your manabase seems a
little shaky and you really want to hit your 4th land drop. - Hallowed Burial doesn't make much sense to me. Your Dauntless Escort will not save your guys from the effect, and your opponent will
be the first to lay down some guys again, basically negating your hasty creatures. Fallout should be enough against monowhite
decks, with the support from your Lightning Bolts and Harm's Way. - Guttural Response is also a no-go for Cascade. Try Vexing Shusher instead if you are really afraid of counters (against Fae,
Stag and Fallout should be enough)
Example Decklist
This is a Naya list from German Nationals, Matthias Ludewig made a nice record with it. Maybe you also want to include the Ranger
of Eos plan in your final version.
